Before I begin the story of this day, I guess you want to vote the following. Sound that comes from a machine that has been generated by the company in the same time almost 100 years old this last.

Sure many of you can guess that the voice is the voice of a motorcycle. But what motor? Or more clearly, the motor is brand? Radial Engine Powered Motorcycle

One of our readers sent us this photo of a motorcycle powered by a 7 cylinder radial engine! We have no details of where this is from or who built it. If any of you have seen this or know more about it, please let us know. Several motorcycle builders, including Confederate, say they are using a radial engine when what they have is simply a two cylinder slice. This bike uses the whole thing! Incredible.

More info: The engine seems to be a 110hp 7 cylinder radial from Rotec Engineering. Rotec is an Australian company (Why am I not surprised when I think some Aussie did this?)

Update: Maybe not an Aussie. Maybe Jesse James. The bike was on display at the Legend of the Motorcycle: Concours d’Elegance in California this past weekend.

The engine grew bigger and bigger, so the motorcycle grew bigger to hold the engine and support the weight. As the motorcycle grew heavier, the wheels and tires got bigger and stronger to support the weight, as did the brakes, the frame, etc. The fuel tank also expanded to give the larger engine the fuel it needs.
With growing engine sizes, motorcycles became much faster and could travel much longer distances. Higher speeds meant the addition of a transmission. Rider comfort in the form of bigger tires, suspension systems, seats and so on were added to make the ride better. Additional speed also makes the tires more important for performance, so the tires got wider.

Aprilia readying V4 motor for GP return

Aprilia bosses have confirmed to MCN that a new engine will begin dyno testing next year as the Italian factory plots a future return to the MotoGP world championship.No official date has been set for an Aprilia return to MotoGP after the Noale factory quit the premier class at the end of 2004 having struggled to make the three-cylinder Cube machine competitive.Aprilia boss Gigi Dall’Igna confirmed to MCN that designs of the new motor were currently being worked on.

Aprilia will return to World Superbikes in 2009, but a MotoGP return is on the cards with Dall’Igna confirming Aprilia has no plans to enter the new 250GP four-stroke replacement class.

Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta unveiled the new class last weekend in Le Mans, with capacity between 625 and 650cc, limited revs and controlled ECU.

Aprilia though don’t want to participate in the new class, not least because they don’t have a production 600cc machine like its Japanese rivals.

Dall’Igna told MCN: “We will be back in MotoGP in the future and it will be a V4 motor. For me the V4 is the perfect engine for the 800cc class. For sure Yamaha this year show us that also the in-line four is a very good concept but my opinion is the V4 is the best package.”

Dall’Igna said Aprilia’s new MotoGP would be done completely in-house after heavy involvement from UK-based car engineering company Cosworth on its RS3 990cc machine.

“We will do this project completely in-house. The experience to do a good car engine is not enough to do a good engine for bikes,” added Dall’Igna.
